Frequently Asked Questions
You Are Here  Frequently Asked Questions »

The following 'Frequently Asked Questions' are the ones that are asked of us most often. We hope the answers help you in making your decision to come and walk the track.

Q: How long is the jet boat journey?

A: From Martins Bay Lodge to the Pyke River Confluence the journey takes 45 minutes (depending on the size of the load and river conditions).

Q: Can I join in with someone else's flight booking?

A: No problems, if there is a flight already booked for the day you request we will most certainly put you in contact with other passengers. Please do not expect us to spend time trying to marry up peoples travel arrangements and flight plans.

Q: Can I get from Martins Bay Lodge to the Hollyford Road End in one day?

A: Yes easily. As long as you are a reasonably fit walker, and it is a day that the jetboat runs from Martins Bay up to the Pyke Confluence; the walk out to the road end can be done in about 5hours and can meet Tracknet Coaches.

Q: What will the weather be like?

A: Both in Fiordland and the remote West Coast the weather can range between gloriously hot sunny days to torrential down pours and bitter cold. Be prepared and expect to experience it all! For up to date local weather forecasts go to the Department of Conservation website: www.doc.govt.nz/explore/weather

Q: What wildlife will I see?

A: Keep your eyes peeled and you will see a huge amount of native birds: e.g: tomtits, keruru (wood pigeons), bellbirds, tuis, piwakawaka (fantail), native ducks, and sea birds and many more; Southern Fur Seals at Long Reef; at certain times of the year the Kotuku (the white heron), also the Fiordland Crested penguin can be seen at Martins Bay; sometimes Bottle nose dolphins will make their way up the Hollyford River Mouth and into Lake McKerrow. Introduced deer are hard to see but they're there, and unfortunately also stoats and possums!

Q: I want to stay at Gunn's Camp. How do I book?

A: Gunn's Camp is a camping site (on the premises of Mr Murray Gunn) on the Hollyford Road. There is no email or phone there, so no way of making a booking. The best way is to just turn up.
