"There is
no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothing"
The walk is pleasantly challenging and highly rewarding, without
being out of the reach of people with an average fitness level.
A question that is often asked of us by guests, is what they should
wear or pack to come into a wilderness area.

We suggest you bring the following items:
You will need to bring two sets of clothing - one for hiking and one for the evening.
Hiking wear:
- Sturdy hiking boots - with ankle support (not too heavy and well broken-in)
- Socks - ideally a wool or thermal blend
- Trousers - we recommend one of two options:
- Either quick-dry shorts with thermal long johns worn underneath (the classic Kiwi look)
- Or quick-dry long hiking trousers
- Thermal top - wool or polypropylene, preferably long sleeved (even in summer!)
- Warm fleece jacket / jumper or similar
- Woollen hat or Beanie / Peaked Cap
- 100% Waterproof jacket with hood
We strongly recommend being covered from wrist to ankle when on the track as protection from sand-flies. Please note that jeans and heavy cotton clothing are unsuitable for walking in Fiordland conditions.
Should you get wet during the day, we have drying rooms at both lodges, so if all gear is lightweight and fast-drying, it should all dry overnight.
Evening wear:
- Light shoes / sandals for walking around the lodges
- Trousers or track pants
- Shirt /cosy t-shirt
- Nightwear (whatever you like to sleep in)
Other Items:
- Water bottle - minimum 500ml
- 'Second Skin' blister pack or some sort of blister protection
- Insect repellent and sun block
- Camera with plenty of film/memory card space and charger/batteries
- Credit card/Cash - for any souvenirs, and we sell beer and wine at the lodges
- Personal toiletries - toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
What we supply
All meals, towels, linen, duvets, soap, shampoo and hair dryers.
What we can supply at no extra cost (if required)
Packs, rain jackets, pack liners. We advise bringing your own packs/rain jackets if you have them as they are likely to be more 'broken in', however we are happy to lend you some if you need.
