Hollyford Track Takes Over Guided Walks NZ

Media Release from Ngāi Tahu Tourism

TRENZ Booth Number 1070

GWNZ Routeburn Track 2At the end of summer Ngāi Tahu Tourism completed the purchase of Guided Walks New Zealand and Snowshoeing NZ.

Guided Walks NZ (GWNZ) is the oldest guiding company in New Zealand, having been started by the Bryant family in 1868.  It is being merged with the Hollyford Track Guided Walking company also based in Queenstown and owned by Ngāi Tahu Tourism.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism Chief Executive Quinton Hall said  trips operated by GWNZ were a close fit with the guiding culture and customer care philosophy of its Hollyford Track operation.

“The addition of GWNZ also broadens the range of guided walking options we can now offer,” he said.  “From the multi-day Hollyford track of Fiordland we now have some excellent half and full day walks in and around Queenstown.”

Mr Hall wished previous owners Peter and Karyn Hitchman all the best as they headed to the Coromandel to continue their ‘You vs Wild’ tourism operation in a warmer climate.

“You’ve both done a fantastic job of building on the brand established by the Bryant family almost 150 years ago,” he said.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism is excited about the possibilities that the Snowshoeing activity brings to the Hollyford team in terms of seasonality of operation and staffing, but also the accessibility that Snowshoeing offers to emerging markets.

“The ease of the snow experience and great scenery are both perfect for emerging markets.  Add that to the ability to employ our experienced guiding staff year round, and the move has  a lot of positives,” Mr Hall added.

Mrs Hitchman said she and Peter were proud of their accomplishments and the relationships they had built in Queenstown and among their many suppliers.  “We’re really pleased to pass the mantle on to a company such as Ngāi Tahu Tourism.  We’re leaving the business in good hands and we know it will grow and flourish in their care.”
